Corruption in theatre

Corruption is not only a political phenomenon but also a fundamental feature in the present world.
It has its root in the veins of every human being. It’s not just taking or giving bribe. But making injustice to one’s self thoughts, emotions and ideas is also corruption. Everyone talks about corruption made by politicians, officers etc. but no one talks of the corrupt man within us.  Each one of us wants to get rid of corruption which is strongly settled in various streams of government and politics. But no one is self esteemed to come out of corruption of their daily life.
The word ‘corrupt’ is derived from the Latin word ‘corruptus’ which means to abuse or destroy. So the adjective corruption gives the meaning of utterly broken. Corruption has been extended its hands in almost every part of the society. Corruption itself is taking the control of the whole society in its hands. It has become common in every field like legislature, politics, corporate sector, business, industries, agriculture, organization, education, medical including arts.
Corruption in the field of art and theatre is different from that of politics and government offices. But now politics itself is included in theatre; there is some similarity in both. There are many government departments and NGO’s which give funds and aids to cultural activities like drama, music, yakshagana and some folk arts. This funds and aids are misused and by so called artists.  Actually these institutions are providing financial help for the programs which will be useful to common people and in the development of art and culture. But some of the artists and organizations are taking the advantage of these institutions in order to make money for their personal use. By producing the false records, photos and information, they are swallowing large amount money. Such people use art for commercial purpose.  Because of these developments, the organizations concerned with development of art and culture and conducting cultural activities which educate and inform the people are not at all getting financial supports. By this, such organizations are lagging behind and decreasing their activities. This is the bad development in the field of art, especially in theatre.
Another aspect of corruption in theatre is the rivalry between two artists. The main basic concept or idea of theatre is to bring people of different races, communities, castes, people who are having different kind of feelings, interests, behavior and personality together or to make a group. Concept of theatre is, not the presentation but the process. By bringing the people together we can make a revolution. It is a collective activity. So the process gains importance. But however, nowadays presentation itself is becoming the final destination of a drama. Due to this change, the rivalry, competition, unhealthy techniques to become popular etc are developing. Many artists and directors are working only to get individual fame. They are not at all bothered about the policies and concerns of theatre. Theatre is by the people, of the people and should be for the people. But in order to become popular, many directors are using unnecessary techniques, sets, properties of high cost which is not at all important to audience. This is another kind of corruption in theatre.
A drama should be simple, should use minimum sets, properties, music, costumes etc and should educate and create awareness about something. It is not only a medium of entertainment. But the artists should have concern for people and the basic policies of theatre and they have to work within those conditions to give out the best.  NGO’s and government departments should be strict and lawful in giving the financial support. And every artist must be trustworthy in his work. There should not be personal prejudices among the artists. All artists should have in their mind that, they are working for the development of art and culture and mainly for the welfare of common people. There should be unity among artists in fulfilling the goals of theatre.

  3. But now is era of capitalism. Nothing works without money. Many people who have passion cannot continue with their dreams. So how can people stick to and follow rules at that time?

  4. That's what i have said. the financial aid is misused. Passion should not be fashion. Passion with out certain principle is of no use. So the financial support should be used in the correct way with broader views. Artists should not be selfish.

    1. Thank you :) Its not the work of an individual or two... whole group should unite and decide individually for the cause.. and act to their conscience... So try to inform about this within your friend circle and other people who have same view point.. Let people know about this..
